SME Fund 2024

Today, the European Patent Office (EPO)  and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) have  unveiled a groundbreaking joint study highlighting the pivotal role  patents and trademarks play in propelling the success of European  startups.

Startups in their seed or early-stage phase that have  applied for patent and trademark registrations have a staggering 10.2  times higher likelihood of securing the funding they need to flourish.

It's  also worth noting that the biotechnology sector emerges as a  frontrunner in the utilization of registered patents and trademarks.  Nearly half of the startups in this sector actively seek to acquire  intellectual property rights, underscoring the critical importance of  protecting innovation in the ever-evolving world of biotech.

Finally,  this insightful research underscores the significance of intellectual  property in shaping the future of European startups and their quest for  growth and innovation.

The new Unitary Patent System is launched today, June 1st!


This   new system will transform the patent landscape in Europe, simplifying   and harmonizing the process for all stakeholders involved.


The Unitary Patent System will streamline intellectual property protection by offering a single patent with unitary effect in the 17 participating EU member states.

By embracing  this system, companies can access a  unified market spanning, by now,  17 participating EU member states. The  Unitary Patent System reduces translation costs, facilitates smoother market entry, broader protection, and increased opportunities for  collaboration and growth  across borders.


It's a significant milestone for innovation-driven enterprises of all sizes.

INTA 2023

In 2023, the European Union is offering financial support to SMEs through a new SME Fund. The request for the fund may be submitted by an owner, an employee or an  authorized external representative acting on behalf of the SME. The  grants are awarded to the SME, and the reimbursements are transferred  directly to the SMEs.



Recently, two more new vouchers were announced, one aimed at patent protection and the other at plant variety protection.

IAM1000 distinguishes Patentree as a highly recommended IP firm in Portugal

We are delighted to announce that two of our colleagues Teresa Martins (Environmental Engineer) and Ricardo Abrantes  (Materials Engineer) have passed their European Qualifying Examination  (EQE) and will now become European Patent Attorneys. This exam is known  for being one of the most demanding professional examinations, assessing  the knowledge and skills of candidates to represent in proceedings  before the European Patent Office (EPO). 


With these two new entries, PATENTREE strengthens its position as one of the Portuguese IP firms with the largest number of EQE qualified specialists. 


This  prestigious title will not only enrich Teresa’s and Ricardo’s career  experience but also be of even greater help to our clients in their new  extended roles as EPAs.
